A trilogy bout between UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz and Urijah ‘The California Kid’ Faber (25-5) will have to wait with UFC officials announcing a bout between Faber and former champ, Brian Bowles (10-1) for UFC 139 this fall.
UFC 139 is expected to take place on November 19 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. The event marks the first time the UFC has ventured into San Jose, the longtime home of their former rival Strikeforce. Tentatively booked as the headliner is a heavyweight title match between champ Cain Velasquez and challenger Junior dos Santos.
The official announcement for the Faber vs. Bowles match was made at UFC.com.
Two of the top bantamweights in the world will meet in one of the most intriguing bouts of 2011, as Urijah Faber takes on Brian Bowles. This verbally agreed to clash of former WEC champions will take place at UFC 139 in November.
“Before a possible trilogy can be considered between Urijah Faber and his rival, Champion Dominick Cruz, he will take on one of the division’s truly elite fighters, former Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles,” said UFC President Dana White. “A win over Faber would be massive for Bowles’ bid to challenge for the belt that was once his. The stakes are high and the fight will be intense.”
Faber is coming off a loss to Dominick Cruz at UFC 132 earlier this month, losing a five round unanimous decision to the bantamweight champ. Faber is now 2-1 fighting at 135 lbs having stopped Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 52 and earned a unanimous decision over former champ Eddie Wineland at UFC 128.
Bowles also fought on July 2, coincidentally it was also against Mizugaki. The former WEC bantamweight champ earned a unanimous decision over the Japanese fighter putting his UFC record at 2-0. Bowles debuted last March at UFC on Versus 3, earning a submission win over Damacio Page. The only loss of his career was to current champ, Cruz, back at WEC 47, a TKO doctor stoppage due to a broken hand.
