With the Urijah Faber vs. Brian Bowles announcement, it was obvious that a trilogy bout between UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz (18-1) and ‘The California Kid’ was out of the picture, leaving fans asking “What’s next for the ‘Dominator’?”
UFC officials left fans virtually no time to ponder that question as they followed up the Faber vs. Bowles announcement with a bantamweight title match for Cruz, who will now meet Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson (10-1) in October in the main event of UFC on Versus 6.
UFC on Versus 6 is expected to take place on October 1 at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., marking the first UFC event ever held in the U.S. capital. The title bout between Cruz and Johnson also marks the first free title bout on television since 2007.
The official announcement was made on the UFC on Versus 6 threat at UFC.com, which also includes all previous bout announcements for the October event.
Following his exciting five round win over Urijah Faber in July that allowed him to avenge the only loss of his pro career, UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz will jump right back into the fire on Saturday, October 1st, as he defends his crown against number one contender Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. The bout, the first championship fight aired on free cable television since the UFC 75 match between Rampage Jackson and Dan Henderson in 2007, will be televised on Versus.
Cruz found some redemption in his last bout, earning a unanimous decision win over the only opponent to have ever beaten him, former WEC champ Urijah Faber. Both men headlined the UFC 132 event on July 2. The ‘Dominator’ also made his UFC debut with that bout, which also earned both fighters the “Fight of the Night” bonus. The win was his ninth in a row and third straight WEC/UFC title defense.
Johnson has won four in a row which includes both of his Octagon appearances. ‘Mighty Mouse’ was last in action on May 28, earning a unanimous decision win over former champ Miguel Torres at UFC 130. He debuted back in February, earning a decision victory against Norifumi Yamamoto at UFC 126. His last WEC appearance was in November of last year at WEC 52 against Damacio Page. Johnson earned a third round submission win at the Las Vegas show.
