UPDATE: In a follow up from this post from MMAJunkie.com it appears that not only will Frank Trigg not get released from the UFC he will not be retiring as of right now, unless he loses his next fight inside the Octagon that is. The organization has decided to give ‘Twinkle Toes’ one more fight to prove he can still hang in the sports biggest fight promotion.
“They said I’ll get one more shot, another fight, to prove I belong here,” Trigg told MMAjunkie.com. “If I win, they’ve got to keep me around. If I lose and it’s back-to-back losses, they’ll probably drop me, rightfully so.”
After four long years competing in other MMA organizations Frank Trigg (19-7) found himself back inside the Octagon when he took on Josh Koscheck this past Saturday night at UFC 103, but it turned out to be a very short fight as he was TKO’d early on in the first round. With that said his fight may have been his last within the organization and if that is the case Trigg said that he will also call it a career in the process.
Just a short time following the UFC 103 fight card, UFC President Dana White has informed MMAJunkie.com that ‘Twinkle Toes’ will most likely not get another fight in the promotion.
“I think Trigg is one of those guys (like Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic),” White said after the conclusion of the UFC 103 post-fight press conference. “These (other) guys are young and explosive. There’s just a whole other level of talent out there, man, and that’s the way it works. That’s the way this business is.”
White was then asked since Trigg was defeated quickly would he be retained to have at least one more fight and he replied with, “I doubt it,” White shrugged. “He got smoked tonight.”
Following his two welterweight title bouts to then former champion Matt Hughes, Trigg went on to compete with other promotions such as PRIDE, Icon Sport, StrikeForce and WVR Sengoku where he went 7-2 before making his Octagon return.
So in turn, should the UFC ultimately decide to follow through and release Trigg from his current contract then he said himself that he will call it quits and that he does not have the desire to compete anywhere else.
“If they say I’m done, I’m done,” he said. “If the UFC cuts me, I’m done fighting. I don’t have the strength or determination to go fight in the minor leagues anymore. I’ve done it before.
“I didn’t come back here for one fight … so I could say I retired as a UFC fighter. I came back to make a run at a title fight. I want to fight. But if they’re done with me, that’s it.”
Trigg however has still been able to do other things as far as being apart of the sport when he was an analyst and commentator for PRIDE among other things, so that will likely be the case if he really does retire.
