Randy Couture is coming off of a classic fight against Antonio Minotauro Nogueira at UFC 102, but came up short on the judges score cards and went home with a loss. The fight was only Couture’s second 3 round fight of his UFC career. Due to the fact most of his fights in the promotion have always been for titles. In his next fight he will once again go three rounds when he steps into the Octagon against Brandon “The Truth” Vera at UFC 105. While nothing is set in stone, if Couture wins he may have another 5 round fight on his hands and possibly against Lyoto Machida.
In a interview with MMAWeekly.comThe Natural spoke about his main event bout against Brandon Vera at UFC 105, a fight that Couture was originally supposed to face off against former Light Heavyweight champion Rashad Evans.
“They asked me if I’d be willing to step up and fill the spot,” Couture told MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday. “I talked to my team, and evaluated the turnaround and how I was feeling after the Nogueira fight, and it made sense, so we jumped back in.”
“I like the match-up,” said Couture of Vera. “We’re both the same size, he’s a good size light heavyweight as well. He fought at heavyweight for a while. We both have Greco background. He uses his Thai skills a lot in his fights. It’s a good match-up and it’s an interesting fight.”
We know Couture will be looking to compete for a title now that he is back in his old division and spoke about potentially getting back into the mix and possibly facing off against the champion Lyoto Machida.
“I think this fight will put me in the mix at 205,” he said. “Ultimately, I’d love to compete against Machida. Nobody’s really seemed to solve that puzzle yet, and I’m very intrigued by him and his style.”
“I think I have wrestling abilities that he maybe hasn’t seen yet, that could make his usual game plan and his usual style a little more difficult,” said Couture of a possible meeting with the champion.”
Lyoto Machida is facing off against Mauricio Shogun Rua at UFC 104 and Couture will face off against Vera at UFC 105. If they both win their prospective bouts a fight between the two champions is very possible.
