On Wednesday, July 7, the UFC announced it’s Top-Five “Unofficial” Submissions of the Half-Year at UFC.com.
With a total of 124 bouts collectively taking place between all thirteen events, the UFC had their work cut out for them, but they managed to whittle it down to the Top-Five Submissions for the Half-Year.
5. Lightweight Nik Lentz def. Waylon Lowe via guillotine choke – R3 @ 2:24 on March 26 at the UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis event. After trailing on the scorecards for the first two rounds, Lentz managed to find his opponents neck in the third for one of the years best comebacks.
4. Middleweight Chris Weidman def. Jesse Bongfeldt via standing guillotine choke – R1 @ 4:54 on June 11 at the UFC 131: Dos Santos vs. Carwin event. Stepping in as a late replacement for Court McGee, Weidman kept his cool taking advantage of a momentary lapse in his opponents defense to secure a standing guillotine.
3. Lightweight Joe Lauzon def. Curt Warburton via Kimura – R1 @ 1:58 on June 26 at the UFC Live: Kongo vs. Barry event. Lauzon earns his seventh “Fight Night” bonus after showcasing his boxing skills against Warburton. After dropping his opponent to the mat, Lauzon jumped in to finish but quickly found a submission instead, locking in a very painful looking Kimura.
2. Featherweight Pablo Garza def. Yves Jabouin via flying triangle choke – R1 @ 4:31 on April 29 at the UFC 129: St-Pierre vs. Shields event. Garza used a flying triangle late to bring his opponent down, and despite not having the submission locked in right away, he was able to secure the submission for his second “Fight Night” bonus in two UFC appearances.
1. Featherweight Chan Sung Jung def. Leonard Garcia via Twister submission – R2 @ 4:59 on Marcy 26 at the UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis event. In a highly anticipated rematch, Korean Jung takes the decision out of the judges hands by securing one of the best submissions of the year. ‘The Korean Zombie’ would lock in a Twister submission, the first time anyone has finished an opponent like that in the UFC, to put the two at a record of 1-1 against one another.
