Velasquez Sidelined 6-8 Months, Dos Santos Doesn’t Plan on Waiting

Cain Velasquez will have to wait a while before he gets to make his first title defense as the UFC heavyweight champion due to a shoulder injury that will sideline him for 6 to 8 months.

Representatives from Velasquez’s management team at Zinkin Entertainment confirmed the injury to  on Wednesday. MMAFighting.com first reported the injury.

Velasquez suffered the shoulder injury during the fight against Brock Lesnar back in October when he won the UFC heavyweight title.

The champion will have to sit out for 6 to 8 months from now which would likely mean a return to action sometime between June and August 2011.

We were able to speak with Dos Santos’ manager Ed Soares on Wednesday as well, and according to him the top contender in the heavyweight division will not be waiting for Velasquez to return before fighting again.
“He is not going to wait 6 months,” Soares said in a text message to us.

Dos Santos last fought in August when he defeated Roy Nelson by unanimous decision at UFC 117 in Oakland. The Brazilian would end up sitting out almost a year between fights, so it appears for now he will be looking for another fight in 2011 before hoping to challenge Velasquez upon his return to the Octagon.
