Josh Thomson vs Gilbert Melendez Lightweight Title Fight Possible for StrikeForce “Evolution”

A championship under the StrikeForce banner has not been defended all year due to the likes of heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem being injured and deciding to fight in Japan to Cung Le doing more movies than fights and ultimately giving up his middleweight title for Jake Shields to grab. Last but not least, lightweight title holder Josh Thomson (16-2) has had a serious string of bad luck as he was unable to defend his belt against current interim lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez (16-2) on two occasions earlier this year, but the promotion is willing to attempt to book this fight on December 19 for StrikeForce “Evolution”.
According to MMAMania.com the bout is under serious consideration by the organization in order to finally unify the lightweight championship going into the new year.

If signed, the bout could also serve as the potential main event on the Showtime televised card as well.

Back in June of 2008, Melendez was defeated at the hands of ‘The Punk’ to become the new StrikeForce 155 pound champion, but injuries have put Thomson on the shelf over the course of the last year and was scheduled to face Melendez in April for StrikeForce “Shamrock vs Diaz” and later on in August for StrikeForce “Carano vs Cyborg”, so hopefully Thomson will not suffer an injury while training for the fight this time around in order to get one champion.

In Thomson’s absence from the cage, Melendez has defeated Rodrigo Damm back in April to become the interim StrikeForce champion and defended the belt against DREAM lightweight standout Mitsuhiro Ishida to still retain his long awaited rematch with Josh Thomson and should this fight get the official green light once more than we will be here to let you know.
