The British site is reporting that former/current (whichever it is) Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem (35-11, 1NC) is close to signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship which would see him debut in December.
A source close to ‘The Reem’ told MMABay.co.uk that the fighter would likely debut at UFC 140 in Toronto, Canada and that they were looking at former UFC champ Brock Lesnar as an opponent.
They go on to say that both sides are still in contract negotiations and nothing is for certain at this time.
Overeem had been scheduled to fight in the Strikeforce Heavyweight World Grand Prix semi-finals but several injuries forced him to withdraw from the tournament. He was then reportedly dismissed by Strikeforce, to then be in “negotiations” and still part of the organization.
Lesnar underwent surgery last May to repair a second bout with diverticulitis. The former champ posted a video on Thursday noting that he was ready to return and was looking to regain his title.
At Thursday’s FOX press conference, UFC President Dana White mentioned that Lesnar hadn’t been training since the spring and would likely return in the New Year.
UFC 140 is tentatively scheduled to take place on December 10 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. No bouts have been announced for the event as of yet.
Between now and December, there is almost four months for Lesnar to prepare, I feel it’s a plausible match that would certainly see big pay-per-view numbers.
Update: Hamers Hamill from the Underground Forums (MixedMartialArts.com) says that Overeem is close to signing and would debut at UFC 140, but it will not be against Lesnar.
He says the UFC wants to book Lesnar and Frank Mir in a grudge match for Novembers UFC on FOX 1 event on television, or at UFC 140.
He is not always right with his rumors, but he is usually damn close. He called the UFC-FOX deal days before it went down, so I personally will give him some leeway when it comes to this rumor.
