Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos Resigned By Strikeforce, Champ Hopes To Compete Soon

It’s been over a year of negotiations with Strikeforce, but women’s featherweight (formerly middleweight, 145 lbs) champion Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Santos (10-1) has resigned with the promotion and is looking to step back in the cage soon.
Santos made the announcement via Twitter late Wednesday night (@criscyborg)
- Contract with @StrikeForce SIGNED! Stay tuned for next fight info! http://fb.me/FUzROZFA
A statement was also released by ‘Cyborg’s management concerning the issue (@mmarantstoday.com via MMAMania.com)
“Cris is ecstatic to be staying under the Zuffa umbrella for another year. She would like to thank Strikeforce and Zuffa for the opportunity to prove she is the best 145lb Woman in the world. Cris has been training and is ready to step back into the cage to defend her Strikeforce belt.”
Negotiations began last year after she stopped Jan Finney by KO at the Fedor vs. Werdum event in San Jose. Strikeforce had exclusive rights to negotiate for a year because of her contract, but both sides were unable to come to terms, with Santos noting that Strikeforce wasn’t offering the same sort of compensation the promotions other champions were receiving.
Santos went on to work on her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, taking the Gold Medal at the 2011 World Jiu-Jitsu Championships as a purple belt. She had planned on stepping back into the cage at a scheduled event in Brazil on August 6, and was in negotiations with a promoter in Singapore, leading many to believe it was to have been for the One Fighting Championship promotion.
It seems now, that the two sides have worked past the financial compensation issue with this announcement and fans should expect to see the No. 1 women’s fighter back in the cage late this fall or early next year.
