He did make his Octagon return last September at UFC 119 after a 16 month layoff, winning a controversial split decision against Evan Dunham at the event. Since that victory, Sherk has opted to rehab some of his injuries and is looking to return this fall.
In a recent interview with FiveKnuckles.com, Sherk spoke about a range of subjects from his suspension from the California State Athletic Commission in 2007, his fight with Dunham as well as his thoughts on the judges decision, the lightweight division, plus a few other subjects.
The important notes for ‘Muscle Shark’ fans to focus on, is that the former champ is coming back and has plans on making another title run.
“I should be back in early fall,” Sherk said. “I want another contender. Just want to keep fighting contenders and keep fighting guys that I feel like they have something to offer me, because anytime I fight somebody and I’ve been in the industry for so long, I’ve accomplished so much, anybody that I fight it’s going to be a big fight for them. It’s going to be a big win if they beat me. So I got to put my butt on the line and I want to fight another top contender. Someone whose got some momentum going so if I beat them it furthers my career as well. So it’s kind of a win-win for both of us you know… ”Sherk is 2-2 in his last four bouts, earning the split decision win over Dunham at UFC 119, while losing a unanimous decision to current champ Frankie Edgar at UFC 98. Besides the win in 2010, it was a tough year for him having to pull out of two fights due to injuries, UFC 108 against Jim Miller and UFC on Versus 1 against Clay Guida.
“I’m going to fight for as long as I can and I’ll just let my body tell me when the time is time. When I’m not able to compete anymore with the upcoming guys then it’s time for me to walk away. I am able to compete with anybody in the world right now, there’s not anyone in this industry that’s going to take me lightly or think that I’m an easy fight. I definitely think I’m top 10, top five in the world. I still think I can make a run for the world title. I’m a force to be reckoned with so there’s no reason for me to walk away at this point in time.”
