Despite Loss, Pat Barry Happy Fans Got To Witness Greatest Comeback Ever

UFC heavyweight, and former K-1 kickboxer, Pat ‘Hype or Die’ Barry (6-3) took part in the greatest comeback in mixed martial arts history last month, unfortunately for him he was on the losing side of that comeback.
On June 26, he and French striker, Cheick Kongo, squared off in the main event of the UFC on Versus 4 event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In the opening minutes, Barry had his opponents on the ropes having dropped Kongo to the mat, twice. Just as he was moving in for the kill, Kongo clipped Barry on the side of the head and then finished with an uppercut.
For Kongo, it was probably the greatest victory in his career, one that earned him his win bonus and an extra $70,000 in “Knockout of the Night” bonus money.
For Barry, it hurt his record, putting him at 3-3 in the UFC, and it hurt him financially as he saw his “win” bonus slip away.
In the end though, Barry wouldn’t have it any other way, as he got to be part of one of the most memorable comebacks in the history of the sport.
“From a fan point of view, there could have been no better outcome to that fight. That was the best possible end to that fight that could have happened. If I would have just kept going and knocked him out, it would have been awesome for me financially and for my record. And yeah, it would have been awesome for the crowd, but it would have been nowhere near as exciting as the way it ended. That was the best ending to that fight possible.
“If Dan Miragliotta would have stopped it, he would have robbed Cheick Kongo of one of the best comebacks in UFC history,” Barry said. “And if he would have stopped it, he would have robbed the fans of one of the most exciting endings in the history of the UFC. If he would have stopped that fight, with the way it turned out, it would have been a terrible injustice. We would have all missed one of the greatest 20 seconds in MMA ever.”
Read the rest of Barry’s comments in his interview with Ben Fowlkes at MMAFighting.com, it’s certainly an interesting read, especially when Barry opened his eyes thinking he had won the fight. Check it out by hitting the link.
