UFC On Versus 5: Stephan Bonnar Injured, Replaced By Newcomer Ronny Markes

UFC light heavyweight Stephan ‘The American Psycho’ Bonnar (13-7) has suffered an undisclosed injury during training and has been forced out of his upcoming UFC on Versus 5 (aka UFC Live: Hardy vs. Lytle) bout with Czech fighter Karlos ‘The Terminator’ Vemola (8-1) in August. Stepping in for Bonnar will be promotion newcomer Nova Uniao fighter Ronny Markes (11-1).
- With Stephan Bonnar sidelined by injury, 11-1 Brazilian newcomer Ronny Markes has verbally agreed to step up to the plate to face Karlos Vemola on August 14th’s UFC on Versus card in Milwaukee.
UFC Live: Hardy vs. Lytle is scheduled to take place on Aug. 14 at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and represents the first visit by the UFC to the State. Bonnar vs. Vemola had been set to take place on the main card, but with ‘The American Psycho’ out, it’s likely that one of the other preliminary bouts will be promoted to the four-fight main card.
Vemola recently dropped down from heavyweight for his last fight, a first round TKO victory over Seth Petruzelli at UFC 122. The win also earned him the “Knockout of the Night” bonus for the event. Previous to that the Czech debuted with the top promotion as a heavyweight, losing a unanimous decision to Jon Madsen at UFC 116. ‘The Terminator’ fights out of England, and had, before joining the UFC, defended the regional promotion Cage Fighting Championship heavyweight title five straight times.
Markes, whose real name is Ronny Marki Sales da Silva, is currently riding a four fight win streak after suffering the only loss of his career. Most recently he defeated Paulo Filho by unanimous decision at a International Fighter Championship event last April. The Brazilian has earned five of his wins by (T)KO, four by submission, and two by decision.
