UFC 106 results: Josh Koschecks taps out bloody Anthony Johnson in a eye poking affair

Josh Koscheck came into one of the biggest fights of his career as the underdog to Anthony Johnson at UFC 106 tonight, but showed that his experience over the younger fighter was something his critics missed.

Johnson looked timid when the fight started off and Koscheck could see it and attempted to throw big over hand rights to set the tone of the fight. Koscheck and Johnson exchanged for the majority of the first round, but eventually you knew the Ultimate Fighter season 1 veteran would go for a takedown. He did, but was not able to takedown the taller Johnson at first.

Johnson then grazed Koscheck with a knee while he attempted to stand up, from the numerous replays it looked like the knee forced Koscheck’s finger into his own left eye. The fight was stopped at first by referee Mario Yamasaki and Koscheck was given time to be looked at by the Doctor. The Doctor wanted to stop the fight, but the alert Yamasaki told the Doctor “He has 3 minutes” to heal. The Doctor actually said he did not know if Koscheck had the time to recoup, but a rule that changed due to one of Johnson’s earlier fights against Kevin Johnson when he had his retina detached.

The fight continued and Koscheck was able to land the takedown to close out the first round while he landed knees to Johnson’s ribs from the back.

In the beginning of the second round Koscheck poked Johnson in the eye, but there was only a small wait until the action restarted and Koscheck went back to work. The fighters exchanged flurries in the center of the Octagon, but Koscheck did not want to risk being knocked out and took the fight where he was at a advantage and took down Johnson again.

This was the beginning of the end as Koscheck went to work and landed short elbows to Johnson’s head and opened a cut on his face. He eventually took Johnson’s back and put a tight rear naked choke to end the fight at the 4:47 mark of the 2nd round.

Koscheck called out Dan Hardy at the end of the fight and stated that he was the number one contender to the title. Saying Dan Hardy who was in attendance had fought “nobody”.

He made a interesting argument.
