TUF 10 contestant Darrill Schoonover called back to active military duty

by Natalia Baage

Darrill Schoonover, a current contestant on The Ultimate Fighter season 10, has been called back to active duty in the military.

He received orders for a 400-day (13+ month) tour to the Middle East, Schoonover told Shambala Sports Radio.

"On the orders, it says 'Operation Enduring Freedom,' so I'm pretty sure I'm going to Afghanistan," he said. "Not 100% yet, but that's what my orders are telling me."

Schoonover confirmed that he will be fighting at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale on Dec. 5, but could not reveal who he would be fighting, as to not give away any secrets from the show. Schoonover will fight in a quarterfinal bout against Marcus Jones this Wednesday in the last episode of TUF 10 before the finale will take place live on Dec. 5. This week's episode, on Nov. 25, will be a two-hour special event that will feature the last two quarterfinal fights and the two semifinal fights.

After already serving for four years, Schoonover is now halfway through the four year frame of his four years of inactive duty. Roughly two years ago, he was released from the army with an honorable discharge.

Recently, Schoonover said that he saw on the news that President Obama was calling 40,000 troops back to Afghanistan, and then soon after received orders for to return to duty.

"At first I was kind of pissed," he said. "I was like, 'Yeah, well I've already served my country for four years and I've already been out for almost two years. I'm getting my fighting started. I'm getting the ball rolling with all that, and now you're calling me back.' So at first I was kind of mad, but the very next day, I just accepted it. Yeah, I gotta go over there and do what I gotta do. And then come back in a year and continue working on my fighting."

According to Schoonover, he will use the time in the army to cut weight so that he can compete in the light-heavyweight division when he returns.

"As long as I get back safe," he said, "everything'll be okay."
