Ariel Helwani: Gina Carano Not Scheduled for Strikeforce's Dec. 17 Card

Another full calendar year will go by without Gina Carano competing in an MMA cage.

Carano, still arguably the most famous women's MMA fighter in the world, will not be fighting on Strikeforce's Dec. 17 card in San Diego, sources close to the event confirmed with MMAFighting.com. There had been some speculation that Carano was targeting a return to action on the card.

The 29-year-old Carano last competed for Strikeforce in Aug. 2009. She lost via first-round TKO to Cris Cyborg in the last women's fight to headline a major Strikeforce card on Showtime. Since then, Carano has pursued a movie career and stayed out of the MMA spotlight, rarely doing media appearances or showing up to fights.

She announced her return to Strikeforce in February, however, an undisclosed illness forced her to pull out of her June 18 fight against Sarah D'Alelio. As of right now, Strikeforce has no plans for her return to the cage.

So the next time you want to see Carano in action, it will have to be on the silver screen when she stars in her first motion picture, "Haywire," which is set to be released on Jan. 20.

The promotion's year-end show will consist of a four-fight main card, which will air live on Showtime:

Ariel Helwani: ProElite Signs Broadcast Deal With HDNet

ProElite is back on cable television.

The organization announced late Monday night that it had signed a multi-fight broadcast deal with HDNet to air its events live on the cable network. As a result, ProElite: Big Guns will air live on HDNet on Nov. 5 from the i wireless Center in Moline, Ill.

"Our multi-fight agreement with HDNet elevates the ProElite brand to a national MMA audience with a preeminent broadcast partner," said Paul Feller, President and CEO of Stratus Media Group, the parent company of ProElite, and Chairman of the organization. The co-main event for the organization's second card under new ownership will feature Andrei Arlovski vs. Travis Fulton and Tim Sylvia vs. Andreas Kraniotakes, plus the start of eight-man heavyweight tournament.

EliteXC, a subsidiary of ProElite, debuted on Showtime in Feb. 2007 and subsequently folded in Oct. 2008. In Aug. 2011, the new ProElite launched, with its first event airing online.

Ariel Helwani: Frankie Edgar Asked to Motivate New York Jets Once Again

The struggling New York Jets meet their rivals the Miami Dolphins on Monday night, and they have called upon on old good luck charm to help motivate them after a disappointing 2-3 start.

UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will meet with Jets players Sunday evening to help inspire them like he did last November prior to a game against Houston. UFC officials confirmed the visit with MMAFighting.com on Sunday.

This marks the second time Edgar, a native of Toms River, N.J., has been invited by the team to talk to the players. Jets head coach Rex Ryan, a big MMA fan, invited Edgar to address the team on the eve of a Week 11 meeting against the Texans in November 2010. The Jets ended up beating the Texans 30-27 after scoring a touchdown with just 10 seconds left in the game.

After the comeback victory, Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez credited Edgar for motivating his teammates before the game.

"The guy is barely taller than this podium, and this guy, he beats BJ Penn in a UFC Championship bout," Sanchez said. "Everybody counted him out. They wanted a rematch, and then he went back and beat him even worse. Talk about a guy who's mentally tough, physically tough. He came in and spoke to the team last night. Perfect timing. Just talking about never giving up, being counted out, playing until the end, fighting and believing in yourself, believing in your team and the people around you. Those were the only people telling him he could win the fight. Everybody else counted him out. ... Perfect timing for Rex to bring somebody in like that and give us a little extra inspiration. So it was great for Frankie to come in."

Edgar's story has become even more inspirational after coming back from a disastrous first round against Gray Maynard at UFC 125 to force a draw. Then, in a fight reminiscent of their Jan. 1 classic, Edgar once again came back from the jaws of defeat to knockout Maynard in the fourth round at last week's UFC 136 event in Houston.
