UFC 143 on Super Bowl weekend likely bound for Mandalay Bay Events Center

The UFC's annual Super Bowl weekend event appears to have a home.

The Feb. 4 show, which is likely to be UFC 143, is expected to take place at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, sources close to the event told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).

However, as of today, an official request for the event date and location has not been registered with Nevada State Athletic Commission, and UFC executives have not made an official announcement.

The UFC's Super Bowl weekend event typically is one of the year's biggest, and 2012 will be no different. Following a dominant win over B.J. Penn this past weekend at UFC 137, Nick Diaz (26-7 MMA, 7-4 UFC) leapfrogged Carlos Condit and now meets UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (22-2 MMA, 16-2 UFC) at the event. The fighters initially were expected to headline UFC 137, but Diaz was pulled from the title fight after no-showing a pair of pre-event press conferences.

The UFC has held a Super Bowl weekend event in Las Vegas every year since 2004. All but one have taken place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center, a 12,000-seat venue on the Las Vegas Strip.

No other fights have been announced for the Feb. 4 card, though UFC president Dana White said Condit also likely will fight at the event.
