Uh-oh! We ain’t saying no names, but it looks like at least one aging UFC superstar might be a little bit jealous about Chuck Liddell’s new “job” as the UFC’s Executive Vice President of Business Development. We’ll give you a hint … let’s see here … it’s a guy who … ah fuck it, it’s Matt Hughes. Yeah, we were conducting our bi-monthly spin by Hughes’ blog this week to make sure we filled our quota for smug, semi-coherent unchristian Christian blather when we stumbled upon this gem. Country Breakfast’s latest entry, headlined simply “Chuck’s Retirement,” is so textbook Hughes that it makes you wonder if the former welterweight champ is really even still writing these things himself or if it’s just some computerized algorithm that will continue to publish blogs in Hughes’ name long after the human race has faced the wrath of his vengeful God.
In this case, the algorithm is something like: Act like a dick, act like a dick, holiday snapshot of the kid, Bible verse, end. It's interesting to note here that in this entry ostensibly about Chuck’s retirement, Hughes spends just a couple short paragraphs on Liddell before segueing straight into an out-of-the-blue indictment of Georges St. Pierre’s “boring” performance against Josh Koscheck at UFC 124. Shit. Now, that’s just sour grapes, plain and simple. First the Liddell stuff …
Matty Takedown starts things off with a tongue-in-cheek congratulations to Liddell on his new executive position with Zuffa and then offers up an embedded vid of “The Iceman’s” infamous doped-up interview on Good Morning Texas from a few years ago. Hughes quips that Liddell’s incoherent mumblings are “probably what prompted the UFC to promote Chuck to his current role.”
Don’t worry though, he quickly explains that he’s just joking, that he’s only trying to pay Liddell back for making fun of him over some magazine spread years back. So, it’s cool you guys. Hughes is being a dick, but his intentions are good.
Except, the tenor of this “all in fun” teasing of Liddell makes us think back to the recent blog where Hughes not so subtly suggested that the UFC needed a third man in the broadcast booth … someone halfway articulate, but with some fighting experience …
Nah, it’d be crazy to think that with his own career winding down Matt Hughes is bucking for an office job with the UFC and secretly feels slighted that the company would hand this VP gig to an obvious lout like Liddell instead of offering it to him. Right? Right?
Anyway, it’s probably best if we just let you read Hughes’ review of St. Pierre’s performance at UFC 124 for yourself. You remember, the one where GSP broke Koscheck’s orbital bone in the first round and then continued to unmercifully thump him on the feet for 20 more minutes? Yeah, shockingly Hughes was not impressed.
“I haven’t talked to you guys since the GSP fight so I’m going to say this, even though I’m going to piss a bunch of people off,” Hughes writes. “To me the GSP fight was boring and I’m even going to tell you why I think it was boring: because I believe GSP is on defense. Number one, he doesn’t want to lose the belt and, number two, I think the UFC is paying him too much money and he doesn’t want to lose that either. I don’t know what’s going on in his mind; but he just doesn’t seem like he wants to finish anybody.”
There you go, just the unbiased, honest opinion of a guy who lost not one, but two welterweight title bouts to St. Pierre. Come to think of it, it’s Hughes’ objectivity and unfettered commitment to the truth that would make him such a great broadcaster for the UFC. As for an executive vice president of business development? Well, the company probably needs someone who will be more open to the idea of doing tons of blow with the sheik of Abu Dhabi. Seems like the UFC made the right hire there …
Oh, shit. We almost forgot. Bible verse of the week, y’all:
May all that search for You be filled with joy and gladness in You. May those who love Your salvation repeatedly shout, “The LORD is great!” (Psalm 40:16)
Dude. Creepy.
