By the end of last nights main event, UFC welterweight Josh Koscheck looked like he’d been hit by a truck. In the first round against Georges St-Pierre, Koscheck took a few stiff jabs from the champ and could be seen wiping at his right eye. The eye quickly swelled up and by the third round was virtually shut closed.
The cageside physician spoke to Koscheck between rounds asking him if he wanted to stop but the challenger refused to quit and carried on through all five rounds. By the end of the fight Koscheck looked like something from the “Elephant Man” movie.
According to Josh Gross at ESPN.com, Koscheck suffered a broken orbital in the first round against GSP and was released from a Montreal hospital on Sunday afternoon. Due to an air pocket that formed in the injury Koscheck is unable to fly. The UFC has made arrangements for Koscheck and trainer Bob Cook to drive to Boston so he can undergo surgery for the injury there.
“We’re going to have a much better sense of the injury when we get to the States,” Cook said. “We’ll get it checked down there. Hopefully he can have the surgery there and head home as soon as possible.”
